What to Check Before Buying a Used Car

Finding a used car can be a daunting task, going from one car dealership to the next. It can also take up a lot of your time, not to mention those pesky sales people. When you do find that perfect car, you don't want to end up with a car that has mechanical problems and body faults. There are checks that should be done if you are looking at buying a used car, this will help you identify any signs of accident damage and body faults.
Interior: When you first get into the car, take note that it does not smell damp, also by lifting the carpet you can check for dampness or rust. Sit in all the seats and try the seat belts you want to make sure that you are comfortable and any adjustable seats are easy to adjust. Seat belts should all be working and not frayed. Don't forget to test all the controls (indicators, lights, locks, gauges, heater, air conditioner, stereo, wipers). Look out for any warning lights on the dash, and check that all windows go up and down easily.
Body: Take a close look around the car, has a filler been used to repair rust or damage. Is there any variations in the paintwork are there any different panels. Open, close and lock all doors, including the boot and bonnet checking there are no gaps and they are in working order. Around the windows, rubber seals and especially all door bottoms check for rust or bubbles in the paint. Under the Car: After you have bought your car you don't want to be spending more money on a set of tires. Check they all including the spare, have a good amount of tread still on them and that they haven't worn unevenly, this could mean the steering alignment needs to be done and it can be costly. While you are under the car look for rust spots and give the exhaust a shake to make sure it is not to loose. Also it's a good idea to place a damp rag over the tailpipe while the engine is running. If you hear spitting noises this is an indication there could be holes in the pipe.
Under the hood: Check there is oil on the dip-stick and it is not milky looking, if it is this can be a sign of a blown head gasket. The power steering fluid and break fluid should be on the full mark and the coolant reserve should be full and brightly colored. Battery terminals need to be clean with no corrosion around them. Look at the radiator water to make sure it is not rusty. Take a final look under the car for leaking oil, water or petrol. It is a good idea the make your own check list or search on the internet and take it with you when you go looking for your next car. If you are using online auctions and can't get to see the car, find out if it has had a certified check. For a small fee some places have people that will do it for you. And don't forget to ask if the car comes with a warranty.

Thanks for sharing these very detailed and useful information! I am scheduled to visit a couple of local auto dealerships in Indianapolis next week and I could definitely use all your tips! A used car buyer like me should be prepared by taking their time asking for advices, tips and recommendations when they visit a number of car dealerships in Indianapolis, Indiana or in any other areas.

Thanks for the tips!
